In a press release yesterday, SandboxAQ announced their new partnership with over 30 major universities and educational organizations to work towards training masters and Ph.D. students in quantum, AI, cyber, and other technologies.

The goal of the initiative is to fulfill the growing demand of quantum workforce talent as the industry rolls out new advanced technology. This initiative hopes to create a clear pipeline for talent into the industry. On top of graduate students, SandboxAQ will also partner with corporate partners to up-skill their personal workforces. This partnership will broaden the reach of workforce development from new graduates to industry professionals, a necessary step as quantum applications expand into outside industries.

SandboxAQ has detailed the following initiatives for their university partners:

  1. Residency Programs: Students are pulled globally with the goal to create a diverse range of voices when building transformative technologies. They have currently hosted residents from over 15 countries. The residency program has five areas of study: quantum security, quantum sensing, quantum stimulation and optimization, AI, and learning science/education. Residencies can be either in-person or remote and are accepted on a rolling basis.

  2. Curriculum Development: SanboxAQ has currently partnered with four higher-ed organizations including New York University and University of Mondragon to develop coursework in quantum technologies, linear algebra, machine learning, cryptography, and other topics. The coursework aims to up-skill both students and corporate and federal employees.

  3. Grants: Partnered with City University of New York to expand their quantum education and opportunities. The $200,000 grant will go towards a new undergraduate photonics lab and a series of in-person workshops at the graduate center.

  4. Fellowships: Support Ph.D. and faculty white paper and journal article development with the offering of faculty teaching fellowships.

  5. Talks and Seminars: With partnered universities, SandboxAQ will offer certification programs, educational bootcamps, and promote guest lectures. These initiatives will take place both on-campus at at SandboxAQ.

This initiative is a large step towards training a specialized quantum workforce. The initiative also works to provide diverse entry pathways into quantum, geared towards not only students, but professionals as well. Overall, it help to diversify the minds, voices, and backgrounds of those in quantum, an essential step to a prosperous industry.
